The Burly

Description

The Burly is our take on the timeless classic, the mini-Simmons. Through many years of testing and tweaking, we have adapted this incredibly fast design to fit into our local Moroccan waves. Named after our good friend Justin “Burly” Bruursema, who introduced us to this fantastic outline.

A very full outline, only slightly tapered at the tail, gives this board an incredible amount of planing surface for it’s length, meaning it can be ridden as short as 5’2″. The rocker is very flat except a large up-turn in the last couple inches of the nose, to keep you from diving for pearls. We do a deep single concave through the tail sections to give the a little bit of tail rocker for turns, without shortening the waterline along the rails. Generally, medium thickness in the rails, with a thinned out tail and an aggressive edge allows the board to turn surprisingly hard.

We surf this board with either a twin fin or a quad set up, to leave the center of the board unobstructed and keep the drag down. On some of our models with a more aggressive single concave in the tail and sharper rails, this board also can be ridden finless or with very small fins on clean days. We usually glass this board with a 6oz bottom and 6+4oz deck, a little bit heavy, but nothing crazy.
