The Crabs

Description

Take a Linter (performance shortboard) stretch it out, pull in the tail, and add some rocker and you have yourself our step-up/mini gun, “The Crabs.” It is not named after the itch in your wetsuit after a night on the city, but instead for a local left-hander that can go from fun sized to all-you-can-eat overnight. When the waves are big, and the drops steep, getting in a half second early can make quite a difference.

That’s why these boards have some volume. Stock thickness varies from 2 1/2″ on the slim side to 3″ on the chunky side. The volume tapers sharply out to an aggressive rail for setting your line early and holding it. Stock lengths are from 6’4″ to 7’0″ with rocker ranging from 4″-5 1/2″ in the nose (just in case you didn’t get in early). Generally, the Crabs features a shallow single concave to allow for more speed and power so that you can maneuver around sections and escape through doggy doors.

Most of the time we glass these boards a bit heavier (6oz bottom and 6+4 deck) to deal with the beatings they incur in the more substantial surf. However we do frequently  glass them with 6oz bottoms and 4+4 decks for those who prefer light weight over longevity. Fin options include 5 fin, quad, and thruster, though we find most people like to have the option for a quad in heavier, top-to-bottom conditions.

If you are itching to step it up to some bigger, heavier surf, then the Crabs is waiting for you.
